Exploration/Mind Mapping: When exploring this project, I first had to ask, “What is purposeful lighting?” While trivial in nature, it helps expand my knowledge in lighting, specifically its key features and use cases.
Why a weather lamp? After exploring different types of lighting, I learned that task lighting can be niche with purpose which isn’t great. One of these niche areas are lights that depict weather conditions.
However, while exploring existing weather lamps, there seemed to be a disconnect between form and function.
Trend Observation: As a designer, it’s difficult to not address the fact that lighting is extremely saturated. However, while exploring current trends I learned that the use of ambient lighting has become more favorable than standard ceiling lights.
Design Brief: I began ideating with the goal of designing an informational light that conveys real time weather patterns while following current trends of ambient lighting.
Concept Refinement: While interviewing my peers, I learned that one of the first things they do when waking up is to look outside. Through this interaction and inspiration from window panels, I began refining the concept to replicate those daily interactions.
Fabrication: An overview of the process included, combining processes using 3D print, 2% white acrylic, and walnut hardwood to close in all of the electronics. From there I adhered the frame together followed by sanding, priming, and finishing the frame.
